Staff from the Missouri Department of Revenue’s Drivers License Bureau in the Harry S Truman State Office Building are interviewed after presenting ideas to a panel about how to improve efficiency for customers. They were part of the Show-Me Challenge Friday, an opportunity in which state employees put forth their ideas to help with office or client efficiency.

An idea to notify Missourians about renewal requirements for their cars, boats and other vehicles by an electronic notification system crossed the finish line first in the fifth cycle of the Show-Me Challenge.

Seven finalist teams competed Friday before a panel of state government senior leaders to present the best ideas to improve state government. Inspired by the hit TV show "Shark Tank," the challenge brought employees from across Missouri's 16 executive departments to pitch solutions that improve services, cut out unnecessary bureaucratic work, and save the state time and money.

The Department of Revenue's pitch, "Motor Vehicle and Driver License Electronic Notifications", was announced as the winner Monday.

In the pitch Friday, the department said the system would address consumers' need for more streamlined departmental correspondence and a large amount of mail being returned to the department. The electronic system, which would offer an email and text messaging option, would be used to remind people about renewals for vehicle, boat, trailer, ATV and disabled placards, as well as driver and nondriver license renewals.

The winning team members were: Dana O'Connell, Dustin Fortson, Karen Dudenhoeffer, Lexi Holt, Gina Wisch and Tracye Harmon.

Second place in the challenge went to "OA Document Solutions" from the Office of Administration, which suggested a digital overhaul of the state's incoming mail and documents.

Third place went to "A New Dimension in Laboratory Supplies" from the Department of Health and Senior Services, which suggested the department begin 3D printing replacement laboratory supplies using recycled plastic waste.

The judges for the fifth cycle of the challenge were: Rob Dixon, director of Department of Economic Development; Tracy Hinds, deputy commissioner of Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; Cindy Dixon, director of state operational excellence and of general services in the Office of Administration; Amanda Wilbers, operational excellence leader in the Department of Public Safety; and Melody Reichel, process improvement coordinator in the Department of Revenue.

To date, more than 600 team members have pitched ideas to improve production and processes across state government. Cycle 6 of the Show Me Challenge competition will begin in spring 2022.
