Our Opinion: Considering a Christmas pet?

Unfortunately, government operations aren't immune to shutdowns stemming from COVID-19 and staffing shortages.

The Jefferson City Animal Shelter announced it will be closed through Friday because it lacks the staff to remain open.

But you can still view pets that are available for adoption at adoptapet.com/adoption_rescue/103172-jefferson-city-animal-shelter-jefferson-city-missouri

You also can schedule a viewing of a pet please by calling the shelter at 573-634-6429.

The timing struck us -- the closure takes place as we're entering into the Christmas season, a popular time for families to get pets.

A dog or cat could make for an amazing Christmas morning gift. Or it could be akin to that ill-fated goldfish your children won at the carnival.

It could hinge on how ready and committed your family is to welcome a new addition.

If you're thinking about getting a pet, consider getting one from the animal shelter. They spay/neuter their dogs and cats, make sure they have a good temperament and give them their needed vaccinations.

We just ask if you're considering a new pet, don't make a snap decision in the spirit of the holiday season.

There are many questions to consider:

• How will affect your children? Will it get along with existing pets?

• Are family members ready for the responsibilities of walking dogs, cleaning cat litter boxes and spending quality time with the new members of the family?

• Can you afford a new pet? The adoption fee is just the beginning, and there's much more than the cost of food. There are veterinarian appointments, places for them to sleep/have shelter outside, toys, medications, flea/tick preventatives, etc.

• Do you have the time to properly take care of a new pet?

These are just some of the considerations. There are many more, including finding the pet that is most compatible with your family.

But if you have come to the decision to get a pet, there are many reasons to get it from the animal shelter. For one, it could save the life of an animal that might otherwise be euthanized. Also, you won't be supporting a mass- breeding facility, some of which are known for the cruel treatment of animals.

So consider the happiness a pet could add to your home. Just hold off on a decision until you know you're ready.
