Leash up for JC Parks Dog Jog 5K this weekend

A new JC Parks event aims to get legs moving and tails wagging.

Saturday’s Dog Jog 5K run/walk — hosted by the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department in conjunction with dog training business Smokin’ Guns Working Dog Club — starts with check in from 8:30-9:55 a.m. and the run beginning at 10 a.m. at the North Jefferson City Pavilion, 927 4th St.

Alexis Kerman, JC Parks outdoor recreation program manager, said the department has had to cancel planning for this event the previous two years — in 2020 due to COVID-19 and in 2019 because of the tornado — so she’s excited to see it finally come to fruition.

“I have three dogs of my own, and I know people who have dogs really love their pets so this is a way for people to get out with their four-legged friends,” Kerman said.

Food trucks and vendor booths — for the humans and canines — offering pet adoptions, dog training and treats will be set up in the area until 1 p.m.

Registration costs $35 (cash or check preferred if registering the day of), and only one dog per registered participant is permitted. No aggressive dogs are allowed, and they must be on a 6-foot or less leash at all times.
