Helias fourth after opening day in Class 5 golf tourney

SEDALIA - The Helias Crusaders are in fourth place at the halfway point of the Class 5 boys golf state championships following Monday's first round at Sedalia Country Club.

Helias posted a team score of 308. Chaminade is in first place with a 292, while Hickman and Staley are tied for second, each carding a 306. Marquette trails the Crusaders by two strokes with 18 holes to play for a state trophy.

A total of 53 golfers in the 79-player field broke 80 in Monday's first round.

Archer Schnieders leads Helias after posting a 4-over 74, putting him in a seven-way tie for 20th place. Schnieders birdied the par-3 15th hole and added 12 pars and five bogeys in his round.

Drew Higgins is in a six-way tie for 34th place with a 6-over 76 for Helias. Higgins birdied the par-4 16th hole and had 13 pars and three bogeys in his round.

Burke Bauer was next for the Crusaders, as he finished his first round in a six-way tie for 40th place with a 7-over 77. Bauer birdied the ninth and 12th holes, both par 5s, and added eight pars and seven bogeys in his round.

Davis Linhardt rounded out Helias' Day 1 team score with an 11-over 81, tying him for 59th place. Linhardt birdied the par-4 sixth hole and also recorded 10 pars and three bogeys in his round.

Five players broke par in the first round. Pembroke Hill's Ryan Lee is atop the leaderboard with a 3-under 67, while Hickman's David Polacek is second with a 68. Marquette's Tyler Linenbroker, Poplar Bluff's Alexander Wiseman and Rockhurst's Otto Zinn each carded a 69.

The tournament concludes with today's final 18 holes. Higgins tees off on hole No. 1 at 8:09 a.m. and Schnieders begins his round at 8:54 a.m., while Linhardt (9:03 a.m.) and Bauer (9:48 a.m.) open their second rounds on hole No. 10.
