BizBeat: Veterans United donates to local nonprofits

The Veterans United Foundation recently gifted $10 million to nearly 100 nonprofits -- including seven in Jefferson City -- as part of Veteran United Insurance's employee-led, 10-year foundation anniversary celebration.

The foundation donated more than $8 million to more than 60 Mid-Missouri organizations, according to a VU news release. This includes nearly $200,000 total to seven Jefferson City organizations: Aging Best, Capital Arts, Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association, Day Solutions Foundation, the HALO Jefferson City Boys Program, Scene One Theatre and Transformational Housing.

The rest of the money will go to organizations located throughout the country surrounding the 30 Veterans United Home Loans branch locations, according to a VU news release.

In July, Veterans United employees nominated projects on behalf of local nonprofits that would provide lasting impact to each organization and community. From there, VU employees voted on the projects.

To be considered, each nomination had to include a nonprofit organization located within one hour of the employee's home or office, and any financial support had to go toward a specific impactful project in the planning stages or on a long-term wish list.

Support is going to organizations that focus on veteran support, education and youth services, emergency relief and recovery, home ownership and adapted housing, mental health treatment and awareness, social impact and more.

"We often assist organizations throughout the year to fund aspects of regular programming," Erika Pryor, Veterans United Foundation manager, said in the news release. "With this celebration of our history, we saw an opportunity to jump-start these projects that will provide a tangible difference in our communities for generations to come."
