Surprise! New site is interesting. A slight learning curve here. Looks like you have to log in each time you wish to read/write comments. More to be discovered. Users may wish to review privacy settings in their profile.

jDeeken 4 years, 1 month ago

I had to create a new account before it would let me log on.Hope I'm not to slow to figure out how to spout out about things that will never change. Jack Deeken

1

jeffcitygirl 4 years, 1 month ago

Would have been nice to know if we had to sign up for a new account that it would not keep our real name private under the "latest comments". I had to figure out how to get into my profile and remove my name from appearing publicly. I like an anonmity of being able to vent, comment, and post without having to reveal my identity. Be warned if you sign up for an account and don't want your name splashed all over the home page that you need to go into your proflie (only way I could find it was to click on the comment I made then on the little box with a person in it and stumbled upon it that way) and erase your first & last name so it doesn't show up on your profile.

0

jeffcitygirl 4 years, 1 month ago

Oh by the way I LOVE the redesign - so much more user friendly and looks more up to date, but something appears to be broken under "latest comments" when you click on the comment to go to it it takes you to a completely different story...with no comments.

0

nunyabidness 4 years, 1 month ago

I like it! Much nicer to look at and easier to use. Is there still a 250 word limit?

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

jeffcitygirl- You are correct about the latest comments linking. I am working to fix that asap!

As for the word limit nunyabidness, there is currently a limit of 3000 characters (spaces included) for comments or blogs or wall postings. I think everyone is pretty used to keeping their comments much shorter than this.

0

xhepera 4 years, 1 month ago

Kudos on the new design! Much cleaner, easier to read and navigate, less dated looking and quite elegant!

0

tholt 4 years, 1 month ago

When I click on a number underneath the photo of the Sheriff, nothing changes. Same photo is still there.

0

tholt 4 years, 1 month ago

Why is my name displayed?? I went and changed it in my profile and now it's on the comment section!! Please remove my comment with my name. What a joke!

0

xhepera 4 years, 1 month ago

Perhaps if you had actually "saved" your changes to the profile it would stick. Just a suggestion.

0

tholt 4 years, 1 month ago

I did save my changes. Thanks for your help.

0

jeffcitygirl 4 years, 1 month ago

tholt..go up to the top and click on profile..you can just delete your name out of the public profile and keep your user name..shocked me and took me a bit to figure out too!

1

jeffcitygirl 4 years, 1 month ago

Oh, i dont' think it will remove the one where your name showed up in the comments, couldnt' get mine out either...maybe the editor can do it?

0

tholt 4 years, 1 month ago

It was a purge issue. It's fixed now.

0

tholt 4 years, 1 month ago

I guess I wasn't patient enough when I first deleted my info.

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

jcgirl- Could be your computer cache or a router cache, but it will clear shortly, promise.

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

The recent comments links should all work now!

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

Has anyone posted to their personal Blog or Blogged about a story yet?

Did you know you can click on the user names and view all these things... * (Name) of the user's profile * Comments * Votes * Friends * Favorites

You can even send each other messages now!

0

jeffcitygirl 4 years, 1 month ago

Yay, all fixed, all better, thanks webmaster, I'm sure you have your hands full today! I do like the functionality of being able to send messages privately between users, that's pretty cool and will hopefully cut down on the public sniping a bit! Great site!

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

about the anonymity... try clicking on your user profile, then look for the link that says anonymity. Fill this in, which give us adminsitrators your info, not the public here on the site, and this should make your actual name private.

0

Moblogger 4 years, 1 month ago

Like it a lot. Nice. Where did the state news section go to?

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

Two places. State news headlines appear on the home page. Scroll down until you find them. Then click on "more" for the entire state news index. Alternatively, in the navigation strip across the top of the home page or any other page, hover over "News" and click on "State" in the pull-down menu.

0

Moblogger 4 years, 1 month ago

Never mind found it. Would be nice if those were tags in the top row.

0

JCLifer 4 years, 1 month ago

I miss the categories for state, local, opinion, sports, etc.

Also the mobile site is a great option but it still needs a lot of work to make it more functional. Thanks for work to improving your web presence.

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

Thanks for the feedback. All of those categories still exist. They're anchored on the home page. If you scroll down the home page, you'll see the most recent headlines under each category. (Frankly, the features you can see by scrolling down the new home page are more worthy of viewing than scrolling down the old site's home page.) Clicking "more" beside the category name takes you to that category's index page with all recent stories. The categories are also listed in the menu that drops down whenever you hover your cursor over "News" in the navigation strip across the top of each page. Hope that helps.

The mobile site will probably get more attention once things settle down a bit. We're focused on tweaking various issues on the main site right now.

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

I just wanted to also thank everyone for all the feedback! It really has been helpful. I have been using the feedback to guide me in adjustments. We really do have the best readers. You all are very patient and I really feel like we are doing this transition together. Please keep the feedback coming!

herewego 4 years, 1 month ago

The Weather has no Radar image and the pressure value on the graphs maybe would be better in Inches of Mercury that most of us are used to seeing, not the value that is used (which is not even named)...

Like the new NT redesign, a slight learning curve though.

0

rodinman 4 years, 1 month ago

Agree with jeffcitygirl about anonymity and the new design.

0

JCLifer 4 years, 1 month ago

Too much spam.

I liked the old site better.

0

jDeeken 4 years, 1 month ago

please do something about all these shopping posts. Surely they can be deleted soon after they are submitted Thanks Jack Deeken

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

We asked the spammers to test out the server in its demo stage before it went live to the public, but for some reason, they didn't cooperate. Heh heh. On a serious note, we share the concern and we'll attack the issue more vigorously on Monday. The gentleman in your icon looks like he might be able to help with some firepower perhaps? :)

0

jDeeken 4 years, 1 month ago

Please get the spam situation fixed.I enjoy this site but am rather frustrated with the way it has been hijacked. Thanks. Jack Deeken

0

JCLifer 4 years, 1 month ago

I would not let the spammers register for this site!

0

RetiredOne 4 years, 1 month ago

It is sort of nice to shop and read the news at the same time.

0

herewego 4 years, 1 month ago

NT-- GET RID OF THE SPAM.... Pretty bad when they even spam your blog....

0

asb 4 years, 1 month ago

The captions on the home page article pictures are hard to read when the image has a lot of bright areas in it. A separate caption space is usually how this is handled and I'd recommend it.

0

gofish 4 years, 1 month ago

See the above shopping post. When you click "suggest removal" it takes you to a screen that asks if you really want to flag the comment. When you proceed to the bottom and click to flag it, the screen just refreshes with the same info and no confirmation that your flag was submitted. That would be a nice thing to fix to avoid multiple clicks on the flag hoping that a confirmation will appear.

0

RetiredOne 4 years, 1 month ago

When is the NT going to get the spam issue fixed? Surely the authors of the code know how to close these back doors?

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

Maybe filter URL 'shopping.com' or such, same as a post containing offensive language. Did not have this problem with the old page. These shopping ads are annoying. Would never patronize these trashters.

0

RetiredOne 4 years, 1 month ago

I wonder if the NT would fix these spam ads more quickly if they were advertising sex or drugs. Why don't someone post such an ad and let's see what happens.

0

jDeeken 4 years, 1 month ago

I'm ready to go back to the old site. With the spam problem,I find that I'm not really interested in looking at what has been posted.I would check the old one a couple times a day but now I only look every day or so.It wasn't broken. Why did you try to fix it? Jack Deeken

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

Agreed JD. These shopping ads are very annoying. Losing interest in the N/T real fast. Should have left it alone or worked out the kinks before bringing it into the real world.

0

jcmo5266 4 years, 1 month ago

I agree about the shopping ads.

0

herewego 4 years, 1 month ago

Maybe that's what NT wants. Less Comments. Like others I'm becoming very annoyed and have stopped about 75 % of my commenting on articles (after having to sing up again I changed my ID), why look, all it is is Ads.

FIX IT or go back, PLEASE!

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

If the spammers insist on putting their shopping ads out here, the least they could do is provide modeled photos of the bikinis and short tank tops.

0

jDeeken 4 years, 1 month ago

Did the paper have to pay for the new shopping siie or do they get payed for the ads? I will not check it again for at least 3 or 4 days.If it isn't fixed by that time, I will not be back for a long time.PLEASE GO BACK TO THE OLD WEB SITE.Jack Deeken

0

JCLifer 4 years, 1 month ago

mobile site is still very limited. Sounds like their programmers may have taken a few weeks off after launching the site!

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

Hey inim20r and all other spammers, I've got a hot sell for YOU. It's big, brown and stinky. Now go away and leave the N/T alone. We're not gonna buy any of your knockoff junk anyway.

0

JCLifer 4 years, 1 month ago

Someone needs to revoke the spammers' registration.

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

My guess is that spammers are coming in from social networking sites. The administrators would know for sure. Looked at other media comment sections and the N/T seems to be the only one with a problem. Other goofy things wrong with this site like View Your Comment doesn't work. As you move around on this site, you have to repeatedly sign back in. Hope it gets better.

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

My theory is that it picked up because the site improvements include search engine optimization, more story links on the home page and others, and stories that are easier to share. That's good overall, but the down side is that spammers now have an easy-to-read treasure map. But that's just an educated guess.

In reference to the view-comment and log-in troubles, what browser and operating system are you running, JCsleeper?

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

Please be patient and drop kick the spam into your psychological "kill" filter, if you will. I've been deleting it en masse but obviously it's multiple 'bots. We've been told by the content management host that they're working on installing a new software filter and it should be in place early this week, but I'm not going to jinx it by repeating the precise timetable they've told us, because they already missed one promise. So hang tight, and as klutzy outdoorsman Red Green would say, "Remember I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together." Thanks. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

Sign in/out function works ok now.Comments are working properly, also. May have been browser cache. Thanks

0

asb 4 years, 1 month ago

Still haven't fixed the white captions hiding in bright photos. Thanks for killing most spam. The site is getting better.

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

Update: Spam filter caught most of it on Tuesday, then started missing on Tuesday night, so it appears the spambots have been reprogrammed. I'm not going to immediately remove spam manually this morning because the attacks need to be analyzed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

I'll make an exception and remove that one. :)

0

TEDDY 4 years, 1 month ago

OK..Im not a big fan of the new site...sorry. The spam is to much "madeshopping" get a life loser!!

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

The filter's catching some, missing others, so there's more work to be done.

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

We did in fact install a filter, obviously this did not catch all the spam, in fact it fell quite short. We understand that this has caused some frustrations and we apologize. We will be installing captcha on the registration field and on the comment field. This will take some time, so I ask for a bit of your patience. We will get this worked out. Thanks!

0

JCsleeper 4 years, 1 month ago

If the install is going to take some time, perhaps you should revert back to the old site until it is is functional. Face it, no one wants to waste time scrolling down through comments, only to find it's shopping ad. It would also be preferable to have the latest comments at the top. There seems to be quite a reduction in reader comments since the redesign.

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

Unfortunately, there's nothing to revert back to. The lease ran out with the old host, the home was vacated and most of the furniture hauled to the dump so we could furnish this brand new. It's a nice place with lots of upscale features that we've only begun to tap, but, at the moment, we're all victims of home invaders who are bouncing their spam bots off an unending supply of computers in China. They use a variety of tricks to be different each time and difficult to universally block. (Rhetorical question: How can the Chinese gov't censor its own Internet users so thoroughly but not stop garbage like this?) We're sorry for all the inconvenience this is causing, but I don't think it's unfair to say that spammers like this have criminal mindsets. They trespass and trash your property with no concern for you or your guests. I left some of it alone on Wednesday so the web hosts could see how it behaved, but I'll go back to blasting more of it manually if I need to. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

P.S. I see the web providers trying out some test messages on the filter as I write this, but it's only killing some of it.

0

TEDDY 4 years, 1 month ago

I agree...i did enjoy the bannter, now its just a big disappointment to scroll down and see BS

0

JCLifer 4 years, 1 month ago

Mobile site needs "most commented" button and "number of comments indicator" for each newslink.

The new site has a lot of promise - just needs some work.

Thanks NT.

0

Not_Sure 4 years, 1 month ago

This is just too good - the spammers are now spamming the place where the newspaper is apologizing for all the spam! Priceless!!

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

Oh, they didn't just start coming to this page. After all, they don't exactly respect boundaries. It's just that I've been deleting it more religiously in this thread, as opposed to other places where the programmers are trying to observe and tweak filtering.

0

Thatkeith 4 years, 1 month ago

The spam is very off-putting, but I'm sure y'all know that! :-)

What's also annoying is the site behaviour when I try to edit a comment. (Note: I'm doing this on an iPad so that might be relevant - but I hope not.) I click the 'edit' link, I go to the edit page, but before it finishes loading it hides all the form stuff and shows me a couple of ads instead. It doesn't appear to be a new page; the back button takes me back to the main comments section, not the comment editing page.

Good luck!

0

Thatkeith 4 years, 1 month ago

Okay, UX problems:

When I try to start a blog, it is totally unclear whether I'm being asked for the title to a blog POST or the title for a whole new blog.

When I create whatever-it-is, I can't select any category groups; the popup list is empty.

And finally, I can't see how to actually write anything; it doesn't show me any form items at all. Maybe this is why almost all new blogs are listed as having 0 posts?

(Note in case it is relevant: I'm using an iPad.)

0

online_editor 4 years, 1 month ago

I fear I'll check on this issue and find that the culprit may be that some of this blogging stuff works on Adobe's Flash, and as I'm sure you're aware, iPad is one of the few prevalent platforms that doesn't do Flash. (I don't disagree with Steve Job's reasoning behind that decision, but boy, it sure puts users and designers in between a rock and a hard place.) I'll do some checking on that, hopefully remember Monday, to see if that indeed is the problem or something else. Hopefully I'm totally wrong (after all, you can post comments) and it can be rectified. Thank you for the feedback.

0

online_editor 4 years ago

Well, I've been so busy I forgot about this issue. So I'm putting this here to chide myself and hopefully remind myself to ask about it. But it probably will be after Thanksgiving week.

0

asb 4 years, 1 month ago

Good, much better on the white type in bright images. One more adjustment and you're there . . . the black caption background covers a lot of the photo, so the photo is cropped too much by its own caption. If you'd cut your font size a lot and compress the spacing you'd still get most of the photo. The photo is the point, the caption is only a hint, keep it as small as possible and let the great photos do their work.

0

CMNI_Webmaster 4 years, 1 month ago

I took the lead out of the box, that should help the covering of the images. Also, that black box is only black in Explorer as it is the only browser that does not support transluscent colors. You might try Firefox. Thanks for the input!

0

Scuba 4 years, 1 month ago

Wow, you guy's did a good job here. I think I may migrate from the Tribune...

0

online_editor 4 years ago

I'm getting an error message when I try to post. Well, a whole bunch of computer code actually, but then it posts anyway. I suspect that's related to the new Captcha that has been put in place to prevent spam. I'm posting this as a test, and if I get the same result, I'll copy and paste it into a trouble ticket. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune

Rick. Why are the twitter people allowed to use whatever language they choose? Have you ever read some of the things they write? Plus, who cares what silly things go through their heads? Jack Deeken

0

online_editor 4 years ago

That admittedly is an experiment, but I think it's a valuable one. It's very very unlike old media to do something like that, but if we don't move more toward becoming a hub of community conversation, I think we'll become irrelevant. It's meant to be a sampling of what local people are talking about across the net. Agreed that it could use some fine tuning; it's just finding the time to tackle it. If you see someone being inappropriate, let me know so I can drop them. (Not the silly stuff, that's just the nature of the beast.)

0

two_cents_worth 4 years ago

I like the re-design. It's very clean looking & easy to navigate. Good job! The avatars are fun too. A minor asthetic suggestion I would have is to put a few more pixels worth of spacing along the left edge (& right edge?) of the page. The letters of the articles seem to sprout from the side of the monitor. My tired old eyes find it a bit difficult to read right off the edge of the monitor. Just a minor suggestion...overall a really great new look!

0

two_cents_worth 4 years ago

Hey thanks! That was fast. That looks soooo much better!

0

jDeeken 4 years ago

please be as concerned with the language of the tweeters as you are with the regular posters Thanks Jack Deeken

0

online_editor 4 years ago

Jack, if you see an account that's an offender, you can help me out by e-mailing the account name to news@newstribune.com so I can look back at it. I tried to pick ones that appeared to have a clean history over time, but past performance is not an absolute indication of future behavior. We have removed some as time goes by and we see that they're not maintaining a pristine record. Thanks. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune

0

JCLifer 4 years ago

Why is there such a high concern for controlling language use here? Who cares if folks use potty-language? It reflects on them and hurts them more than it hurts anyone else. If you don't like the language, do what I do regarding what happens when I don't like the topic: just ignore it.

People in this town seem so preoccupied with controlling other peoples' behavior like there is some "proper code" of behavior to be good enough to live in Jefferson City. There are lots of postings here from people telling others that they are wrong to believe a certain way. I don't get it. Live and let live.

0

jDeeken 4 years ago

I have no problem with any language being used. I was only stating that the tweet people should have to abide by the same language censorship that the other posters do. Jack Deeken

Mr. Brown! Mr. Brown! Your website is spamming fiercely this afternoon. And what a load it's sending too, at every page, every refresh, as bad as I've seen from a news site. Hurry, do something or your last 10 non-subscribers will wither!

0

JCLifer 3 years, 11 months ago

  1. What is up with all the pop-ups from this site? I had to close 12 windows a little while ago.

  2. When are you going to start working on the mobile site? It badly needs some lists of "last 10 postings" and "10 most popular stories". Also, it throws a lot of errors and needs to be restared frequently.

Thanks

0

ctygrl4ever 3 years, 10 months ago

Hey, glad to see I'm not the only one having problems with the pop ups!!!!!! I don't have this problem on any other site I visit. I currently have six windows open, 5 are pop ups..... since I don't have this problem on any other sites, seems your new format has figured out a way to get around my blocks......any suggestions?

0

online_editor 3 years, 10 months ago

You're correct. When responding to a letter to the editor (aka "your opinion" letter), we'd like you to respond with a letter to the editor, which will be published in the print edition. In other words, in the same fashion. We try to post the instructions for submission on each one. We're reserving that avenue for folks who sign their letters and have them verified.

0

Rison 3 years, 10 months ago

You could write a reply to them in the paper? Only seems fair since they've posted their real name.

0

rmsberengaria 3 years, 10 months ago

Graceful I think I am having that same problem. When commenting on specific posts by others....I click on "reply" but a drop down box is not opening to post in? I am able to comment on the general topic/article but not as before under the persons actual comment. Have looked and it seems others are able to. Don't know what I did or changed any ideas?

0

bluesfan13 3 years, 10 months ago

That happened for me starting yesterday. Internet Explorer won't open up the box like it used to, but Chrome still works properly.

0

online_editor 3 years, 10 months ago

I've been able to replicate this problem using my own Internet Explorer browser on Vista. I'm now using Firefox to respond with the Reply link in the regular fashion, something that IE wouldn't let me do. That would seem to indicate that it's a problem specific to that particular browser. If it's a newly developed problem, some bit of programming or configuration somewhere must have changed recently that unintentionally broke the functionality of it within IE. I'll alert the techies to look into it. Thanks for the heads up. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune
