Usually the invaders are after something they know, or have a very strong suspicion, is in the residence, like money from a recently cashed check, or (gasp!) drugs. I would be willing to bet that the majority of these incidents are not random in nature. Not pointing fingers in this situation, just saying,,,,,

Hmmm, sounds like someone that is in or knows folks in city hall already wants it and doesn't want to buy it via auction - I smell a rat here.....put it on surplus and sell it like everything else.
