You asked, “Wonder whatever happened to the salary study committee?” how about this as an explanation? The committee spent many long hours researching state employee pay and determined that they were the lowest paid in the nation (a fact already known and now confirmed at taxpayers’ expense). An in-depth presentation was prepared and presented to various elected officials who, being surprised at how little state employees make, included a proposed pay raise in the budget sent to the Governor (not too much of a raise though, would not look good to move up and then end back at the bottom). This being done, the committee is deemed to have fulfilled its purpose and now the elected officials can turn their attention to turning the old Department of Transportation Headquarters in to new office space for state employees.
Unexpected "refinery downtime", I heard it was due to the conversion from winter to summer gasoline by the refineries (just before the first major holiday); then they will blame the conversion to produce fuel oil for winter, just in time for a price jump for Labor Day.
I agree we have too many un-necessary, un-effective laws already and wonder how much of insurance premiums are used to pay for injuries/damages caused by those who drive without insurance. Laws mandating insurance and seatbelt usage are in effect, yet people continue to ignore them. When enacted, the seatbelt law (a ten-dollar fine) was not enforced unless you committed some other infraction, shows how concerned the politicians were with seatbelt usage. I would like a politician to explain why they continue passing laws aimed at protecting those without common sense and then make the penalties for non-compliance so light that many, intended to be protected, continue to ignore it.
I am afraid that it means that Missouri does better at legislating "common sense" so more survive or worse, we have to accept that some of the "smarter" ones moved out-of-state. (TIC)
I hope the residents of the district take special notice of how the political career is more important to the politician than the welfare of their constituents when they vote.
Jefferson City also appears to suffer from a self-determined, over-inflated sense of self-worth partially caused by being the State Capitol but also by the past leaders preventing outside big businesses, a threat their ability to control salaries, to locate here until it was too late and Jefferson City was passed by.
