Dilemma? No more than the dilemma called the “General Assembly”. The same uninformed voters elect legislators based on glitzy ads or pretty faces. Legislators gathered in one “barrel” – easy shooting for high paid selfish-interest lobbyists.
Then they pass omnibus bills few law-makers even read, let alone understand – laws that amount to “legal plunder” and plague the people – laws that allow a developer to take your home or business by eminent domain to build yet another shopping center for his private profit.
Still, a General Assembly full of elected representatives is the best system yet devised – but it still needs the “check” on abuse of power that the people's ballot initiative provides.
If a law, whether passed by the general assembly or the voters in the case of a ballot initiative, violates the constitutional rights of someone else, then legislators are duty bound to repeal it. That's what their oath of office is all about -- to support and defend the constitution of the United States and Missouri.
