Exercise, diets and knees

Researchers say being physically active and losing 10 percent of your weight can help people with osteoarthritis of the knee. At Wake Forest University, researcher Steven Messier saw this in about 400 people over 18 months. Some dieted, some exercised with walking and strength training, and some did both. The goal was to lose at least 10 percent of their weight.
Messier says the people who did both did better:
"The exercise and diet group had the most decrease in pain. They also had improved function and improved mobility compared to the diet-only and the exercise-only groups."
The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
