If you’re giving care to a family member who is seriously ill, it’s also important to take care of yourself. Being a family caregiver is a big job that often comes on top of other work and home responsibilities. So it’s important to watch your stress.
Recreation therapy specialist Renee Stubbs works at the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center. She sees family caregivers all the time and tries to be a support for them as they care for their loved ones undergoing treatment at the research hospital.
“I encourage them to make sure that they do things that are self-sustaining and self-caring: Relaxation. Make sure you’re eating properly. Make sure you’re getting enough rest and sleep.” (12 seconds)
