Maddie Showers, left, Scarlett Wickam and Siera Richardson check out each other’s medals after being named three of the top 10 finalists in an essay contest. The subject was “If I Was the Mayor” and both classes of fifth graders put forth their ideas on paper which were presented for a blind judging. It was narrowed down to the top 10, all of whom received a board game with the top five receiving a medal, also.

Fifth graders write: ‘If I were mayor ...’

Ten fifth-graders were honored Wednesday in Jefferson City for the writing they submitted as part of the “If I Were Mayor” essay contest, but Scarlett Wickham is this year’s top winner.
