This photo provided by Xerox shows a past advertisement for Xerox attempting to defend its brand name from becoming such a common noun for copiers that it falls out of trademark protection. Meanwhile, two years after its release, and hundreds of competitors later, iPad has become the word people use when they want a tablet computer. In many consumers' minds, there are no others.
