Steve Brown, president of the St. Louis Herpetological Society, holds a young alligator Thursday in Cape Girardeau. The alligator is one of around 50 allegedly sold by a man passing through southeast Missouri about 14 months ago, when the animals were roughly the size of a pencil.

The 50 baby alligators were cute little critters, each roughly the size of a pencil, when a Colorado man sold them out of a trailer in the parking lot of the Kennett Eagles Club in southeast Missouri.
