An Allenhurst Dept of Public Works employee removed the carcass of a 740-pound pilot whale that died shortly after washing up on a beach in Allenhurst N.J. A necropsy showed the whale had been shot and died from an infection in its jaw that prevented it from eating.

Federal wildlife officials are looking for whoever shot a whale at sea, leaving the animal to wander the ocean in agony for a month or more before it beached itself in New Jersey and died.
