On Feb. 5, 1911, lightning struck the Capitol building in Jefferson City. The subsequent fire heavily the damaged building; what the fire didn’t ruin, water from the Jefferson City and prison fire departments did. Damages were estimated at more than $1 million.

Events to mark anniversary of Capitol fire

A celebration commemorating the 1911 fire which destroyed the Capitol is planned for 6:15 p.m. Feb. 5.
