Virgil Elmo Moreau

Virgil Elmo Moreau, age 92, of Hartsburg, Mo., passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Ashland Healthcare. Virgil was born June 9, 1920, in Englewood, Mo., son of Alexander and Grace E. Forbis, Moreau. He married Viola Katheryn Schanuth on October 12, 1940, in Columbia. He attended schools at Englewood in Boone County, Fairview, Washington Park and Schumate Chapel in Jefferson City. He was a life long resident of mid-Missouri. He joined the United States Civilian Conservation Corps Headquarters Company 3747 of Paris, Mo., on July 9, 1939, and from there to 773, Drakeville, Iowa. He served his country for three years in World War II, serving in the United States of America Army Air Force as Staff Sergeant, flying 80-90 round trips over China-Berma-India "Hump" as a radio operator receiving four Bronze Star Air Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster and One Distinguish Flying Cross. He worked as a carpenter most of his life and showed his love for family assisting each in building their homes. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union No. 945 for 59 years in Jefferson City, Mo., retiring in 1982 from HRB. He was an avid quail and pheasant hunter, training and admiring good bird dogs. Later years were spent enjoying St. Louis Cardinals ball games. He was a life member of the American Legion Harry B. Pryor Post 152, Ashland, Mo., and Disables Veterans Chapter 17, Jefferson City. He is survived by one brother, Kenneth Moreau and wife Billie of Ashland; three sisters, Dorothy Marie Zumwalt of Ashland, Betty Lou Sapp Buescher of Jefferson City, and Belva Crane and husband Frankie of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, parents, and infant son, Daryl Gene Moreau who passed on March 27, 1949. Funeral services will be help at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Robinson Funeral Home with burial following in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to funeral. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
