Julia "Judy" Anne (Noland) Chryst, 91, of Independence, Mo., passed away Friday, January 25, 2013, at Reston Medical Center in Va. Julia Anne was born in June 1921, to Thomas and Fern (Halleran) Noland. Education was very important to Judy. She graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1939, then earned a Bachelors of Science in Home Economics from the University of Missouri and later a Masters of Science in Nutrition from the University of Mississippi. Judy married Walter E. Chryst in 1969. They led a very exciting life working and traveling in Central and South America and raising their six children. The family's early years were spent at Tyson Corners, Va., long before the mall. Judy was the neighborhood mom. "Julie," as she liked to be called professionally, kept up with her profession as a founding member of Land Ladies. Following her husband's death, Julie pursued her MS in nutrition education and embarked on a remarkable career at age 50. She is a published author, wrote and received numerous grants, and was one of the first advocated for nutritionally balanced school lunches. Her career took her from Washington D.C., to Brazil, China, Guyana, Belize, and back home to Mo. When Julie retired, she moved to McLean, Va., to be close to her children and grandchildren. She continued her good works by volunteering for Partners of America and the Nutrition Education Council. She served as Treasurer for Chesterbrook Methodist Church and a host for Project Children. Julia Anne will be missed by her many friends and family. She is survived by her siblings, Thomas Noland Jr. (Rose Billings) and Frances Lowe (Edward Lowe); and her six children, Joseph Clark (Pam Butler), Martin Kirk (Mary Taylor), Chauncey Byron III (Alice Bashaw), John Marshall (Nancy Hawkins), Carolyn Frances and Mark Noland (Deborah Parlato). Julia has nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Judy was preceded by her husband, Walter E. Chryst; and her brother, Norman A. Noland. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 31, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sedalia.
