Richard P. Burnett, 91, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, March 4, 2013, at Adams Street Place. He was born near Hartsburg, Mo. on February 19, 1922, the first child of Richard Clyde and Beulah Vaughan Burnett. The family moved to Jefferson City when he was of an early age and he received his education in the public school system. He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1940. He married Virginia Lou Huston of Jefferson City on June 16, 1946, at the First Christian Church in Jefferson City. Richard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 until 1946. He was discharged with the rank of radioman first class, having served at Great Lakes, Ill., Cheltenham, Md., Chatham, Mass. and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Following discharge from the Navy, he joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1946. His first assignment was doing routine Patrol work in Brookfield, Mo. for a period of 13 years. His next assignment was at Troop B Headquarters in Macon, Mo. where he worked as the criminal investigator and the lie detector examiner for 17 years. His last five years, he was a lieutenant at Troop F in Jefferson City and retired there in 1981. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Jefferson City. He also held membership in the Masonic Lodge #86 in Brookfield, Mo., the Missouri Highway Patrol Quarter Century Club and the Missouri Highway Patrol Retired Employee Association. For 12 years he was secretary-treasurer of the Northeast Missouri Peace Officers Association and also served with the Boy Scouts in Macon. Survivors are: son, Bob Burnett (wife Mary) of St. Joseph, Mo.; daughter, Becky Schlueter (husband Tim) and son, Bill Burnett (wife Paula) all of Jefferson City; six grandchildren: Kelly Cooper (husband Kevin) of San Diego, Calif., Cory Burnett of Indianapolis, Ind., Matt Schlueter (wife Candace) of St. Peters, Mo., Scott Schlueter (fiancÈ Alesha Heckman), Drew and Kristin Burnett, all of Jefferson City; sister-in-law, Bonnie Burnett of Jefferson City; and brother-in-law, Melvin Hunziker of Wright City, Mo.. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; his parents; daughter, Janet; brother, Harold; granddaughter-in-law, Laurie Burnett; and sister-in-law, Betty Hunziker. Friends will be received from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Hartsburg. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association, B. L.
