Roy “Pappy” E. Zavitz U.S. Veteran

March 19, 1936 - June 17, 2013

Mr. Roy E. "Pappy" Zavitz, age 77 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, June 17, 2013, at his home. Roy was born March 19, 1936, in Livonia, Mich., the son of Elwood and Irene Taylor Zavitz. He was married on January 9, 1968, in Honolulu, Hawaii to Patricia A. Wnek. Roy was a 1954 graduate of Dexter High School, Dexter, Mich. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and served three tours of duty during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired in 1978 after 21 years of service to his country. After retirement from the military, he was employed with Goodrich Hoist, Bechtel Corporation, Daniels International, and Lucas Aerospace. Roy was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; a lifetime member of the American Legion; a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2693; a member of the Army Aviation Assn. of America; and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed playing the stock market and was an avid reader of auto books and military history books. He was a great story teller, but most importantly, Roy loved to spend time with his family. Survivors include: his wife of 45 years, Patricia Zavitz; two sons, Raymond M. Zavitz and his partner Randy Benton of Raymore, Mo. and Peter A. Zavitz and his wife Tammy of Dothan, Ala.; one brother, Gordon Zavitz and his wife Karen of Southgate, Mich.; one sister, Carol Jane Young of Canal Fulton, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2013. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Keith Vessell officiating. Military honors will follow his memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, Maryland 20850-5168. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
