Vivian Swindell DeLong

April 9, 1927 - June 8, 2013

Vivian Swindell DeLong, 86, of Jefferson City died Saturday, June 8, 2013, at St. Joseph's Bluffs. She was born April 9, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of the late Buel and Mildred Swindell. She was a graduate of Zalma High School in Zalma, Missouri. On May 1, 1947, Vivian was united in marriage to George F. DeLong, who survives at their home. Vivian was employed by the Missouri House of Representatives, Missouri Department of Education, Dr. L.E. Giffen and the Missouri Department of Agriculture. She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Vivian enjoyed square dancing, reading, working crossword puzzles, camping and traveling, especially to Colorado. She was very interested in genealogy and did extensive work compiling the history of the Bollinger and Swindell families. Most of all, Vivian enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and loyal pet, Buddy. In addition to her husband of 66 years, she is survived by two sons: G. Leon DeLong and wife Beki and Daniell F. DeLong and wife Gerry, all of Jefferson City; two grandchildren: Jeff DeLong and wife Stacey of Jefferson City, Jennifer Edwards and husband Peter of Joplin; one sister: Maxine May and husband Charles of Advance; and five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Hillary Andebo officiating. Private family interment will be held in Resurrection Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
