Irene B. Stegeman

Mrs. Irene B. Stegeman, age 88 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Jefferson City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on April 8, 1925, in Freeburg, Mo., a daughter of George and Mary (Haller) Gradel. She was married on August 3, 1946, in Freeburg, Mo., to James A. Stegeman, who preceded her in death on April 5, 2007. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Irene attended Holy Family School in Freeburg, Mo. She always loved going to the annual Freeburg picnic to visit with family and friends. She worked at Tweedie Shoe Factory during World War II and later became a homemaker for the majority of her life. Throughout the years she always cherished time with her family, especially playing bingo with her grandchildren. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church where she was involved with the Immaculata Club and St. Ann's Sodality. During her free time, Irene enjoyed counted cross stitch, making quilts for her children and grandchildren, and playing dominos and card games, especially Pinochle. Survivors include: one daughter, Sue Porting and her husband Carl of Jefferson City, Mo.; one son, Curtis Stegeman and his wife Beth Elliott of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Marcella Gradel of Freeburg, Mo.; one brother, Alfred "Buddy" Gradel of Freeburg, Mo.; four grandchildren, Sean Stegeman and his wife Sarah, Scott Stegeman, Andrew Porting, and Zachary Porting; four great-grandchildren, Lily Porting, Adalynn Stegeman, Sylas Stegeman, and Sean Stegeman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; one brother, Eugene "Pistol" Gradel; and one great-granddaughter, Kayln Stegeman. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2013, with a prayer service to be conducted at 12:45 p.m. in the Freeman Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Colin Franklin officiating. Graveside services and entombment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Immaculate Conception Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
