Helen Girard, 95, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2012. She was born on November 23, 1916, in Barrineau Park, Fla., to Nicholas and Barbara (Keller) Leiterman. During World War II, she was a Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp stationed at Camp Shelby, Miss. After the war, she continued to care for others as a nurse for over three decades in Joliet, Ill. Helen was united in marriage to Ted Girard in Pensacola, Fla. on June 29, 1946, and he preceded her in death. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for nearly 20 years. Helen also liked to express herself artistically through oil and china painting. Helen is survived by her three children: Laura Crouch (Dr. John) of Columbia, Stephen Girard (Pamela) of Kansas City, and Christine Gornik (Dennis) of Kentwood, Mich.; two grandchildren: Jana Crouch of Columbia and Nicholas Crouch of St. Augustine, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Herman, and her parents. There will be a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
