James L. Hartley U.S. Veteran

Mr. James L. Hartley, age 72 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012, at Heisinger Bluffs. Jim was born on June 9, 1940, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Clarence Edward and Thelma L. Langkop Hartley. He was married on April 11, 1964, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Linda L. Cardwell. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Jim was a 1958 graduate of Jefferson City High School and a 1968 graduate of Lincoln University. He served in the Missouri Army National Guard for six years. Jim was employed as the Director of Parking and Purchasing for the City of Jefferson for 37 years until his retirement in 2004. He was honored as the Employee of the Year for the City of Jefferson in 1987. He was a member of the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5; the Host Lions Club; the B.P.O. of Elks; the Evening Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; and a lifetime member and past president of the National Assn. of Public Purchasing. He was President of the Lincoln University Baseball Booster Club. Jim played baseball and basketball for the Jefferson City Jays and basketball at Central Missouri State University. Later, he played fast pitch softball for several years. He enjoyed fishing, classic cars, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Missouri football fan. He especially enjoyed coaching his sons in sports. Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Linda Hartley; two sons, J. Mitchell Hartley and his wife Charly of Wichita, Kan., and Brian Hartley and his wife Lindsay of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; one sister, Jane Frost of Newport Beach, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Britni Paige Spencer of Jefferson City, Avalon Isabel Hartley and Lucia Michelle Hartley, both of Wichita, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jay Kenneth Hartley. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 10, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 11, 2012, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Mr. David Miller officiating. Interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Association. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
