John “Coach Jan” J. Jankowski

Mr. John J. "Coach Jan" Jankowski, age 88 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, October 13, 2012, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, Mo. Coach Jan was born December 5, 1923, in Nashville, Ill., the son of Michael and Rose Jankowski. He was married on February 24, 1951, in Boonville, Mo., to Dorothy Jean Burton and they were married 48 years prior to her death on July 7, 2000. Coach Jan attended Nashville Public School and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in St. Louis, Mo. in 1942. Coach Jan served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 until 1945. He saw action in the Pacific Theatre most notably during the Bougainville Campaign. He was a member of the El Toro Marine Football Team. After World War II, he attended St. Louis University in 1946 and then Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo. where he was quarterback for the Central Methodist Eagle Football Team and earned a B.S. in Education. He then earned his Masters of Education at the University of Missouri in 1950. Coach Jan spent 31 years teaching and coaching beginning in Cainsville, Mo. and then at Park Hill High School from 1952 until 1958. In 1958, Coach Jan came to Jefferson City and was employed by the Jefferson City Public Schools where he taught World History, Social Studies, and Physical Education at Jefferson City High School. He was Head Assistant Football Coach from 1958 until 1972 with a record of 134-8-2. He was also the Head Baseball Coach from 1962 until 1969 with a record of 73-29-0 and three Central Missouri Conference Championships. He was Assistant Basketball Coach from 1958 until 1961. Coach Jan retired from coaching in 1972 and teaching in 1981. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa, the National Education Assn., and the Missouri State Teachers Assn. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Survivors include: one son, Reggie Jankowski and his wife Mary of Jefferson City, Mo.; one granddaughter, Hannah Jankowski; three sisters, Ann Bereswill, Lucille Kristanic, and Mary Jane Conrad; and one brother, Harry Jankowski, all of St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Michael Jankowski. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 18, 2012, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Don McMurry officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fayette City Cemetery, Fayette, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jay Football Foundation or the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Assn.
