Vest "Babe" C. Rice, 91, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Heisinger Bluffs. He was born March 30, 1921, in New Bloomfield, a son of the late William and Pearl (Pearre) Rice. He was a 1939 graduate of Jefferson City High School. On September 11, 1943, Babe was united in marriage in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Gertrude W. "Gertie" Castrop, who preceded him in death on March 23, 2001. Babe was an insurance salesman for Western Southern Life Insurance Company for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, and served during World War II. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, American Legion Post 5, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693. Babe was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and over the years, he and his wife Gertie enjoyed dancing at the Eagles Club. He also loved to spend time with his family and friends. Babe is survived by one son: John Rice (wife Debbie) of Jefferson City; one daughter: Judy Fechtel (husband Rick) of Jefferson City; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, with a prayer service to be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2012, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, with Monsignor Robert A. Kurwicki officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Helias Foundation.
