John Lyman Evans

John Lyman Evans, of young spirit, died peacefully Thursday, January 19, 2012, at his home with his family and friends by his side. He was born September 29, 1935, in St. Louis, the son of John Lyman and Johanna (Lange) Evans, both deceased. John served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Teamsters union and worked for UPS in St. Louis and Jefferson City until his retirement. He was the track photographer at Capital Speedway for 10 years and owned and operated Evans Photos for many years. His zest for life carried through in all aspects of his life - photography, auto racing, sports, gardening, his love for animals - and especially his love for his friends and family. John was considered a legend in his time. On October 4, 2003, he was united in marriage in Rich Fountain to Lesa Zika, who survives in Holts Summit. On June 23, 1962, John was united in marriage in Taos to Marilyn Frank, who preceded him in death on January 10, 2000. Other survivors include John's children: Michael Evans and wife Lisa of Columbia, Susan Nelson and husband Erik of St. Louis; and two grandchildren, Carly Evans and Nicklaus Nelson. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will follow in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Taos. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Jefferson City Cosmopolitan Club, to be used for diabetes research and education.
