Leonard Schmutzler (Veteran)

Mr. Leonard Joseph Schmutzler, age 80 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia, Mo., surrounded by his loving family. Leonard was born November 28, 1931, in Osage Bend, Mo., the son of Hugo J. and Clara Viet Schmutzler. He was married on May 29, 1954, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville, Mo. to Marilyn Huhman. A lifelong resident of the Cole County area, Leonard attended Osage Bend School. He served with the SCARWAF Engineering Group in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Leonard was employed with District 5 of the Missouri Highway Dept. for over 48 years prior to retiring as a Survey Crew Party Chief on January 1, 2000. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church; the Holy Name Society; the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5; and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693. Leonard enjoyed crappie fishing, quail, pheasant, and turkey hunting, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Schmutzler; one daughter, Kathleen F. Cremer of Jefferson City, Mo.; one son, Jerald L. Schmutzler of Raytown, Mo.; two brothers, George A. Schmutzler and his wife Hazel of Osage Bend, Mo. and Albert Schmutzler and his wife Irene of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Anna Mae Schmitz and her husband Richard of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Sarah Clardy and her husband Troy of Holts Summit, Mo., Emily Scheperle and her fiancÈ Jason Long of Jefferson City, Mo., Charles Cremer and his wife Pam of Holts Summit, Mo., Jeffrey Cremer and his wife Jill of Jefferson City, Mo., Brock Schmutzler of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Dawson Schmutzler of Raytown, Mo.; and five great-grandchildren, Sam Clardy, Max Clardy, Gretta Scheperle, Brynn Cremer, and Tristin Cremer. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Rosemary Wolfe and Betty Lou Rustemeyer. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2012. A prayer service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Freeman Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Reverend Monsignor David Cox and the Reverend George Kramer officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery at Osage Bend, Mo.
