Richard “Dick” John Bernskoetter U.S. Veteran

July 27, 1936 - August 9, 2012

Richard "Dick" John Bernskoetter, age 76, of California, was called home after a long battle with cancer on Thursday, August 9, 2012, while at home in the blessed presence of his grandaughter. He was born July 27, 1936, in Jefferson City, the son of Hubert and Catherine (Radamacher) Bernskoetter, both of whom preceded him in death. Richard was a 1954 graduate of Jefferson City High School. After graduation he served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1957. Richard was united in marriage on October 26, 1957, in St. Martins, to Alice Ann Schenewerk who survives of the home. Dick was a man of Christian belief. He began employment with Derby Stations followed by self-employment truck driving and excavation for many years. He was later employed for 10 years with St. Peter's Catholic Schools in maintenance and 10 years with Cole R-1 Russellville School until he was forced to retire in 2001. Richard enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, four wheeling and spending time with his grandchildren as well as story telling and tinkering. Richard was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed. Survivors include: his wife Alice of the home; three daughters, Melanie Schaffer with her husband Harold of Columbia, Tenn., Shelley Fischer with her husband Matthew of Russellville, and Kelly Volkart with her husband Tommy of California, one foster son, Dennis Volkart with his wife Jean of Covington, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lorraine Bruemmer with her husband Clarence of Jefferson City, Dorothy Foster with her husband Henry of Fulton, Barbara Robinson of Jefferson City, and Charlene Kixmueller with her husband Sylvester of Linn. Richard was preceded in death, along with his parents, by one brother-in-law and nephew. In Richard's journey, he didn't know a stranger. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 12, 2012, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Weber Funeral Home in Russellville. Mass of a Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 13, 2012, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Russellville with Fr. Steven Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 2413 Hyde Park Road, Jefferson City, MO 65109.
