Doris Jean Long Landrum, age 97, of Northfield, Minn., Saturday, August 13, 2011, in Northfield, Minn.
Doris was born in Forest City, Mo., October 4, 1914, the daughter of R. H. Long and Jessie Ramsay Long.
Doris's parents were schoolteachers in rural Missouri during her childhood.
After one semester at Park College in 1932, she began supporting herself at age 19, teaching grades 4, 5 and 6 at Pleasant Grove School, a tworoom schoolhouse along the Boonville road (Hwy. 179) near Jefferson City, Mo. It was there she met her future husband, Leslie H. Landrum, at that time a farm-boy/college student on his way to becoming a chemical engineer. They were married in 1939, and had four children – George, Orick ("Ricky"), Leslie R. and Jean.
Throughout her life, in all the places she moved to, Doris continued to learn, studying French, Spanish, Russian, Latin, astronomy, psychology, philosophy, current events and literature in college and elsewhere. She was an active community volunteer in each of her many homes, a member of the League of Women Voters, and a published writer.
Predeceased by her parents, her husband, three brothers and their wives and an infant sister, Doris is fondly remembered by her children, their spouses (Carrie, David, Sonia and Wayne), six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.
A small memorial service will be held at October 1, at 4 p,m, at the Village on the Cannon in Northfield, Minn.
