Mr. Charles "Howard" Smith, age 80 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at his home. Howard was born on September 15, 1930, in Excello, Mo., the son of Emery A. and Greta V. Henry Howard. On December 21, 1951 in Macon, Mo., he married Dorothy I. Gibson, who preceded him in death on March 23, 1986. On July 24, 1987, in Jefferson City, Mo., he married Wanda Bingham. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Howard graduated from Macon High School, Macon, Mo., and the University of Missouri at Rolla with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Howard was employed with Sprint as a Division Engineer for many years. Later, he owned Charles Howard Smith Engineering Co. He was a member of the Christian Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the National Rifle Assn. Howard was an avid ham radio operator with the call letters, KÿERL. Survivors include: his wife, Wanda Smith; one son, Robert A. Smith and his wife Darlene of Boonville, Mo.; three daughters, Yvonne Long and her husband James of Osage Bend, Mo., Kathleen Crider and her husband Rob of Greenhill, Mo.; and Tammy Elliott of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Wanda McKinzie of Brandon, S.D. and June Phipps and her husband Stan of Independence, Mo.; 24 grandchildren, including Shannon Short and her husband James, Robert Maher of the home and others, Dorothy Smith, Janie Smith, Charles W. Smith, Clinton Lewis, Abby Lewis, Anthony Senkowski, Misty Senkowski, William Maher, and Kathleen Burrell; and 15 great-grandchildren including Christian Short, of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two daughters, Gena Lewis and Pamela Kinzer; two sons, Edmund Senkowski and Gregory Kinzer; one sister, Helen Willis; and one brother, Dwayne Smith. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Saturday. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2011, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Brint Hilliard officiating. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
