Dr. Robert H. "Bob" Tanner, M.D., age 88 years, formerly of Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Hillside Village in DeSoto, Kan. He was born on August 8, 1922, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Edgar Theodore Tanner, D.D.S., and Kathryn Harvey Tanner. His father, trained in Vienna, was the first orthodontist to practice in Jefferson City, Mo. He married Delores (Dodie) Benson of the St. Louis area on January 24, 1948, and they remained married until Dodie's death in 2010. Robert attended Jefferson City High School and was class president for three years. His education continued at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. His medical education commenced at M.U. and continued at Washington University in St. Louis where he obtained his M.D. in 1947. He began his medical practice in St. Louis and returned to Jefferson City in 1949 to join a family practice with Dr. Leon Taylor. During the Korean War Robert enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in England where he received a commendation ribbon. He was discharged in 1955 and returned to his medical practice in Jefferson City. He became chief of staff at St. Mary's Hospital and Memorial Hospital, President of the Cole County Medical Society, Secretary-Treasurer of the MSMA Foundation, Medical Director of Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company, and a co-founder of Hospice House of Jefferson City. He was also a consultant for Vocational Rehabilitation, Bureau of the Blind and the Public School Retirement System. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Jefferson Bank for many years. He fondly recalled delivering as many as 300 babies a year. He was a lifetime member of the Central United Church of Christ and a member of the Jefferson City Country Club where he much enjoyed many rounds of golf and the camaraderie of his friends. His love of music lasted throughout his life, and he was proudly a trumpet player in the Kapitol Kicks Band. He and Dodie spent many happy weekends at their retreat at the Lake of the Ozarks. Upon his retirement from an active medical practice in 1997, Dr. Robert Buffaloe took over his medical practice. In 2003, he moved to the Kansas City area to be near his family. He is survived by two children, Eric Tanner (Rosalind) and Katherine "Kay" Scott (David); four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Central United Church of Christ or Grace Hospice in Lawrence, Kan. www.freemanmortuary.com
