Ernest Louis Buschjost, age 81, of St. Thomas, passed away Monday, May 16, 2011, at his home. He was born in St. Thomas on July 4, 1929, son of the late Herman and Anna (Borgmeyer) Buschjost. On June 27, 1953, in St. Elizabeth, Ernest married Rose Mary Bax, who survives at the home. He was a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a member of the Argyle VFW Post 8045 and American Legion in Jefferson City. He was a member of the St. Thomas Knights of Columbus #2149 and Fourth Degree St. Jude's Assembly #1567 and also the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Ernie was a past member of the Cole RII School Board and the St. Thomas Fire Department. He was a past Community Girl's Softball Coach and was also a member of the Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) Coop. and of the St. Thomas Over Fifty Club. Ernie loved his wife of 57 years, Rose Mary, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved farming and cutting wood and hay. He took great pride in his country and was proud to be an American and a Korean War Veteran. He enjoyed the simple things in life, such as dancing, playing cards, and getting together with friends and family. He is also survived by four sons, Randy Buschjost and wife Charlene of St. Thomas, Kenny Buschjost and wife Sherry of Osage Bend, Paul Buschjost of Latham, and Joe Buschjost and wife Julie of St. Thomas; three daughters, Janet Weckenborg and husband Dennis, Carol Kirk and husband Brian, and Lynn Schanzmeyer all of St. Elizabeth; 21 grandchildren, Jason Buschjost, Mike Buschjost and wife Kristin, Anna Luecke and husband Jim, Beth Skinner and husband Scott, Brian Weckenborg and wife Colette, Justin Weckenborg, Nancy Weckenborg, Abby Scherf, Lacy Scherf, Andy Scherf, Kimberly Buschjost, Christopher Buschjost, Katie Buschjost, Jacob Buschjost, Daniel Buschjost, Jessica Buschjost, Jennifer Buschjost, Jonathan Buschjost, Shelby Schanzmeyer, Logan Schanzmeyer, and Canon Schanzmeyer; two step-grandchildren, Jessica Kirk and Jennifer Kirk; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Elenore Rodeman; and three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Buschjost, Martha Strope, and Eleanor Schmieg. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Buschjost and Jerome Buschjost. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Porterfield will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 17, at the church.
