LaVerne Rose Fechtel, 71, of Westphalia, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011, at St. Mary's Health Center. She was born November 21, 1939, in Westphalia, a daughter of the late August and Regina (Eichholz) Schmitz. She was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School and Fatima High School, both in Westphalia. On October 10, 1964, LaVerne was united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, to Walter F. Fechtel, who preceded her in death on February 1, 2009. LaVerne worked for the Division of Health and Welfare, and Division of Employment Security, where she retired on April 1, 2006, after 40 years of employment. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens Club, all in Westphalia. She enjoyed visiting her friends at the Westphalia Retirement Center, cruising the streets of Westphalia in her Jeep, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her granddaughter, Olivia. LaVerne is survived by two children: Tina Renee Sultzman (husband Mike) of Westphalia and Troy Regan Fechtel (wife Judy) of Fenton; one granddaughter: Olivia Rose Fechtel; and one sister: Carmelita Grafe of Westphalia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers: Virgil Schmitz and Clarence Schmitz. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Hilke-Millard Funeral Home in Westphalia, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, with Fr. Mark S. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Carmelite Monastery, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
