Cheryl Lou Pope

Cheryl Lou Pope, age 62, of Texarkana Ark., formerly of Jefferson City, died Saturday, March 12, 2011, at her residence. She was born April 10, 1948, in Jefferson City, the daughter of James and Bonna Rapp. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and did graduate work in adult education at Lincoln University. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Christus St. Michael Health Care System in Texarkana until her retirement in 2007. She previously worked at Charles Still Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City and hospitals in Arkansas, Georgia and Florida, primarily in Intensive Care Units and Clinical Education. During her career in nursing, she was a bedside caregiver, an ICU/CCU manager, a hospital nursing educator and most recently was in the role of a nurse informaticist. She received national board certification in Medical/Surgical Nursing and Education/Staff Development. She was a member of the Walnut Church of Christ in Texarkana. Survivors include her husband of the home, David B. Pope; two daughters, Martina (Matthew) Welch of Sherwood, Ark. and Tanya Johnson of Little Rock, Ark.; two step-daughters, Jennifer Bland of Sheveport, La. and Laura (Greg) Stull Coldwater, Miss.; her parents, James and Bonna Rapp of Texarkana, Ark.; three granddaughters and one grandson, Emma and Garrett Welch and Caroline and Hannah Bland. Survivors from Jefferson City include one uncle, Roger Cletus Payne; four aunts, Judy (Frank) Stephens, Mary Scarr, Betty (Paul) Volkmer, and Elsie (Leroy) Strope, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Julia K. Johnson in 1997. Memorial services were held Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Walnut Church of Christ, Texarkana, Texas. Donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Gingerbread House, Home for Severely Handicapped Children, 1401 Truman Ave., Rolla, MO 65401, or to Hospice of Texarkana, 3605 Jefferson, Texarkana, AR 71854.
