James Austin Alley, age 69, of Ballwin, passed away Friday, March 11, 2011, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, after a three and half year fight with cancer. He was born August 20, 1941, in Shannon County, the oldest son of Austin and Ellen Alley. On June 1, 1968, James and Patricia Ann Gallagher married in St. Louis after meeting in San Francisco, Calif. The couple returned to St. Louis and had two children, Paul Austin Alley and Jennifer Ann Alley. Jim graduated from Van Buren High School in Van Buren. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of Missouri - Columbia in 1964. He also received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of San Francisco. After college, Jim enlisted in the Naval Reserves and achieved the rank of Captain. He received an honorable discharge after completing three decades of service to his country in 1990. A successful businessman in sales and marketing, Jim worked in papers and plastics for Monsanto and Mallinckrodt. In the early 1980s, Jim and brother Bill D. Alley began The Alley Partnership, a Missouri timber business focused on the silvicultural practice of selective harvesting of trees. The company then exported veneer worldwide to places such as China, Malaysia and Europe. Jim's wife, Patricia Ann Gallagher Alley, and two children, Paul Austin Alley and Jennifer Ann Alley, survive him. He is also survived by five siblings: Ray A. Alley and wife DeAnn of Jefferson City; Jerry D. Alley and wife Sally of Norman, Okla., Bill D. Alley and Willene of Jefferson City; John D. 'Doug' Alley and wife Janis of Taos; and Coraleta M. Pratt and husband Mark of Freidham. Jim was a happy and proud husband and father to Patricia, Paul and Jen. Funeral from the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway, Ballwin, Wednesday, March 15, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. to St. Peter Catholic Church in Kirkwood, for 10:00 a.m. Mass with burial following at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
