Michael Maurice Fischer, age 63 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, surrounded by his family at his home of complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Mike was born December 28, 1947, in Boonville, the son of Maurice and Theresa Schmitt Fischer, both of whom survive in Sedalia. He was married on August 25, 1973, in Sedalia to Patricia George, who survives at the home. Mike entered the University of Central Missouri after graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Sedalia. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after his freshman year and served four years as a fireman and dental technician. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Warrensburg and completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Central Missouri State University. He was employed by John Deere in Moline, Ill., and returned to central Missouri to operate the John Deere dealership in Versailles. After he sold the dealership, he came to work for the Missouri Department of Conservation in Jefferson City. He retired from Sentry Insurance and the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends and spending time with his grandson, Lain. He was eagerly awaiting the birth of his granddaughter, Stella Josephine Adrian. Other survivors include: one son, Matt Fischer of Columbia; one daughter, Kelly Adrian and her husband Joe of Jefferson City; one grandson, Lain Michael Strope of Jefferson City; four siblings, Marilyn Arnold and her husband Jack, Judith Jackson and her husband Steve, and James Fischer, all of Sedalia; and Michelle Eiken and her husband Randy of Jefferson City; and 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jacqueline Waggoner. Visitation will be held at the Cathedral of St. Joseph from 10:00 until 12:00 noon, Saturday, June 25, 2011. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:00 noon Saturday at the Cathedral of St. Joseph with Monsignor Robert Kurwicki officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Joseph Cathedral School, Sacred Heart School Foundation in Sedalia or to the ALS Association. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
