William (Bill) Oscar Findley, 63, of Holts Summit, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center, surrounded by family and close friends. He was born July12, 1947, in West Plains, a son of Rudy F. and Stella (Lovan) Findley. He was a 1965 graduate of Jefferson City High School. On August 5, 1979, Bill was united in marriage with Katherine (Katie) Ann Phelps Oetting, who survives at their home. Bill was a proud veteran of the U.S. military, serving in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969 and the United States Army from 1971 to 1979, where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Leonard Wood. He worked for the Missouri Department of Corrections from 1979-1981, then served with the Missouri National Guard from 1981 until his retirement in 1994. Following retirement, Bill went back to work for the National Guard, working for Joint Force Headquarters from 1994-2009. Bill retired after over 26 years of service to his country. He worked at Turkey Creek Golf Course for the past year. Bill was a member of the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5, where he served as 1st Vice Commander; charter director of Chapter 5 American Legion Riders; Chef de Tran La Societe Des 40 Hommers Et 8 Cheuaux; Missouri state assistant director of American Legion Riders; state membership coordinator of American Legion Riders; and was a Kentucky Colonel and Tennessee Squire. Bill loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, riding motorcycles, collecting Jack Daniel's memorabilia on their many trips to Lynchburg, Tennessee, playing music on his guitar, singing and dancing. He also enjoyed watching and coaching all of his children and grandchildren in their many sports and school events. He is also survived by three sons: John Findley and wife Staci of Holts Summit, Mike Oetting and wife Melanie of Mexico, Mark Oetting and wife Beth of Jefferson City; one daughter: Michelle Findley of Jefferson City; seven grandchildren: Corey and Alexandra Findley of Blue Springs, Austin, Wesley and Abigail Oetting of Mexico, Clayton Oetting of Jefferson City, Mariah Imler of Jefferson City; and one brother: Rudy Findley and wife Anna of St. Martins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Thomas Findley; three brothers: Benjamin Findley, Thomas Findley, Robert Findley; and two sisters: Louise Clark and Laura D'Eagle. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home with Chaplain Bryan Norman officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Chapter 5 American Legion Riders, American Cancer Society or the Heart of Missouri Humane Society.
