Laura Ann Harrison, age 54 years, of North Las Vegas, Nev., a former Jefferson City resident, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011, in Baltimore, Md. Laura was born August 2, 1956, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of David C. and Allegra Lile Harrison. After graduating from Jefferson City High School in 1974, Laura followed her life's passion for helping kids. She received her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Recreation and Parks Administration from the University of Missouri and then her Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Montana. She is a Johnson & Johnson/UCLA Head Start Fellow. Laura used her knowledge and passion to help kids starting at the Prenger Family Center in Jefferson City, Mo., the Wasco County Juvenile Department in The Dalles, Ore., and then the Youth in Need Program in St. Charles, Mo., focusing on reunification of families, specifically families who were living in stressful circumstances. In August 2008, Laura became the Executive Director of Acelero Learning Center in Clark County, Nev. Laura and her staff served over 2,000 children and families every year. This Head Start Program offers early education services, health, nutrition, disabilities, mental health, and social services to the income eligible children and families. Laura's vision was to give all children the opportunity to meet their full potential. In addition, Laura actively enjoyed visiting family and friends all across the country. This enjoyment included playing cards, watching movies, fishing, boating, and golfing. Survivors include: her parents, David and Allegra Harrison of Hartsburg, Mo.; one brother, David L. Harrison and his wife Betty of Hartsburg, Mo.; one nephew, Scott Harrison and his wife Tamah of Jefferson City, Mo.; and three aunts, Jean Ann Harrison of Lee's Summit, Mo., Jane Harrison of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Nan Nelson and her husband Tom of Barstow, Calif. She was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle, Joan and Gene Florida, and aunt, Barbara Larson. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 24, 2011. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 25, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Robert Erickson and the Reverend Dr. David Henry officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church Covenant Point Youth Camp, 324 Madison St., Jefferson City, MO 65101 or the Acelero Charitable Foundation, which is creating a scholarship in Laura's name, at 4366 West Cheyenne Avenue, North Las Vegas, NV 89032.
