Murle Reed

Murle Ann Millsap Reed, age 93, of Macon, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, Missouri. Murle was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her family has wonderful memories of her grace, kindness and love. Born April 27, 1917, in Wyandotte County, Kansas, Murle was the daughter of Claude and Mattie Comerford Millsap. She grew up on a farm near Edwardsville, Kansas, and graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1935. Murle married C. Buford Reed on June 23, 1940, in Edwardsville, Kansas, and together they raised three children. Murle and Buford moved to Bonner Springs in 1947 after purchasing a grocery store in Muncie, Kansas. In 1958, the family moved to Macon, Missouri, owning and operating Reed's Thriftway until selling the store in 1974. After retirement, Murle and Buford enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe and spent endless hours participating in the lives of their grandchildren. Murle belonged to the First Christian Church of Macon and was a member of many bridge clubs in Macon. She enjoyed playing cards as well as decoupaging and genealogy. She is survived by her three children: Sandi Kiehne of Independence, Missouri, Jim Reed of Liberty, Missouri, and John and Karen Reed of Jefferson City, Missouri; her grandchildren: Matt and Krissie Kiehne of Prairie Village, Kansas, Nate and Sandi Kiehne of Blue Springs, Missouri, Sarah Reed and her husband Gustavo Collantes of Seattle, Washington, Erin Reed of Liberty, Missouri, and Nicholas Reed of South Bend, Indiana; and great-grandchildren: Christian, Ben and Kendal Kiehne and Piper Kiehne. Murle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Margaret Hartegan Placke; her niece, Mary Ann Hartegan Wagner; and nephew, Michael Hartegan. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. today, Friday, February 18 at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Edwardsville Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
