Larry Akin (Veteran)

Larry Lee Akin, age 63, of Versailles, peacefully went home, Friday, January 28, 2011, at University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics in Columbia. He was born February 11, 1947, in Versailles, a son of Norman and Kathryn E. Vogt Akin. He was united in marriage on August 7, 1971, with Sue A. Garber, who survives of the home. Larry graduated from Morgan County R-II High School in Versailles in 1965, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was co-owner of Kidwell-Garber, managing Kidwell Monument Company in Versailles for nearly 40 years. He was a member of the Versailles United Methodist Church. Larry loved drag racing and restoring vintage cars. When not pursuing those passions, he was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Sue Akin of the home; two children, Suzanne Hall and husband Corey, and Landon Akin, and granddaughter Landri, all of Versailles. He is also survived by his father, Norman Akin and wife Laura, of Versailles; one sister, Vicki Akin of Overland Park, Kan.; one brother, Kenneth Akin and wife Sheila, of Diamond; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn, on June 18, 1982, and his step-mother, Peggy Akin, on October 5, 2004. Through the love of a brother-in-law, Gary Garber, and a brother, Kenny Akin, who each selflessly donated a kidney, Larry was able to enjoy many happy years with his family. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 30, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles, with the family receiving friends from noon to 2 p.m. Interment followed in the Versailles Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be left at www.kidwellgarber.com. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ministerial Alliance, the Versailles United Methodist Church, or the Polycystic Kidney Foundation. Arrangements were under the direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.
