Herbert Ellis Johnson, 84, of Valrico, Florida, formerly of Jefferson City, Missouri, died Friday, August 5, 2011 at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born May 10, 1927, in West Decatur, Pennsylvania, the son of Herbert R. and Vera (Smeal) Johnson. On October 29, 1949, Herbert was united in marriage in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, to Vivian Dean Barnes, who survives at their home. Herbert served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947 in the Asiatic-Pacific theater in the occupation forces. He was a graduate of Williamsport Technical School with an Associate's Degree in Drafting. Herbert worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 38 years in the drafting and engineering department, retiring on February 1, 1986 as engineering supervisor of nuclear operations. Herbert was a co-founder, deacon and trustee of Greencrest Park Community Baptist Church in Pennsylvania and had served as deacon at First Baptist Church of Brandon, Florida; Monroeville, Pennsylvania Baptist Church; and Concord Baptist Church in Jefferson City. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Past Master of Eureka Lodge 0290 in Pennsylvania. Herbert was a pilot and had constructed his own homemade aircraft, a Volksplane, and took it for a test flight in 1976 in Jefferson City. He was a longtime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Academy of Model Aeronautics. He had served as township supervisor of Pymatuning, Pennsylvania, and was president of the school board of the Reynolds Area School District in Pennsylvania. Other survivors include four children: Dennis H. Johnson and wife Cheryl of Stuart, Florida, Terry P. Johnson and wife Faith of Charlotte, North Carolina, Deborah A. Poire and husband Rick of Jefferson City, Missouri, Herbert D. Johnson and wife Shelly of Kingsport, Tennessee; one sister, Dolores Zimmerman of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; one brother-in-law, Darrell Hollis; nine grandchildren: Erica, Mike, John, Johnann, Heather, Sarah, Richard Paul, Zachery, Leah; and eight great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Hollis; half- sister, Dottie Moore; and two brothers-in-law, Elwood Zimmerman and Bill Moore. Friends will be received from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Monte Shinkle officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
