Marian Alexander Peterson

Mrs. Marian Alexander Peterson, age 96 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the Capital Region Medical Center. Marian was born September 25, 1914, in Granite City, Ill., to Blossom (Walker) and Norman H. Niedringhaus. At the age of 10, she became a Girl Scout and remained active in that organization as a Camp Counselor, Brownie Leader, and Scout Leader until 1938. When her sons were ready for scouting, she became a Cub Scout Leader. Marian also joined the Presbyterian Church at age 10. Upon graduation from Granite City High School, she attended Washington University in St. Louis. On August 24, 1934, she married F. Howard Alexander. Job changes with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company took the family from Granite City to Springfield, Joplin, St. Louis County, and in 1955 to Jefferson City. She was widowed on July 6, 1978, and on December 31, 1979, she married J. Raymond Peterson, who preceded her in death on October 14, 2002. In 1952, Marian was installed as a Deaconess in the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, and she later was also active as a Deaconess in the Jefferson City First Presbyterian Church. She became a P.E.O. in Chapter HM in Jefferson City in1956. She held lifetime memberships in the Cole County Historical Society and Museum, Memorial Hospital/Capital Region Medical Center Foundation, and the Historic City of Jefferson, Inc. Marian also volunteered many years, starting at St. Mary's Hospital and later at a cerebral palsy clinic that developed into the Goshorn Center and the Special Learning Center. Marian loved her family and friends dearly. She loved living in Jefferson City. She is survived by: two sons, Norman C. (Debbie) Alexander of Weatherford, Texas, and George D. Alexander of Las Cruces, N.M.; a sister, Dorothy "Tim" Langdon of Carbondale, Ill.; two granddaughters, Suzanne (David) Delgado of Seattle, Wash. and Michelle (Patrick) Titzer of Centennial, Colo.; two grandsons, David (Karen) Alexander of Rowayton, Conn. and Kenneth (Kathy) Alexander of Brentwood, Mo.; two great-grandsons, Benjamin Titzer and Jack Alexander; and four great-granddaughters, Melanie Titzer, Madison Alexander, Sarah Alexander, and Hailey Alexander. She is also survived by a step-son, A. Raymond (Joan) Peterson, their five sons and their wives, and 17 step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and an infant son. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 16, 2011. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Robert Erickson and the Reverend Dr. David Henry officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the Special Learning Center.
