Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Gaines, age 87 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, October 4, 2010, at St. Josephs Bluffs. Bettie was born November 6, 1922, in Marshfield, Mo., the daughter of Thomas C. and Emma Grieb Strong. She was married on February 4, 1941, in Los Angeles, California to Jack W. Gaines. A longtime resident of the Jefferson City area, Bettie was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson City High School. A homemaker, Bettie was a lifelong member and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Auxiliary of St. Mary's Health Center. She enjoyed gardening, animals, but most importantly, spending time with her family. Survivors include: her husband of 69 years, Jack Gaines; one daughter, Nancy L. Jones and her husband Marvin of Jefferson City, Mo.; two sons, Greg Gaines and his wife Donna of Cameron, Mo. and Tim Gaines and his wife Cindy of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Vivian Tharp of Warrensburg, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Beth Ireland, Lori Vollink, Doug Salmons, Eric Sappington, Adam Sappington, Carrie Douglas, Scott Gaines, Linsey Snodgrass, and Audrey Gaines; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Ronda Salmons on December 31, 2004, and two brothers, James Strong and Lloyd "Bud" Strong. Visitation will be at the First Presbyterian Church from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend David Henry officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Parkinson Disease Association or the Jefferson City Animal Shelter.
