Lucy Papen

Lucy J. Papen, 97, of High Point, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.
She was born December 19, 1912, in Barnett, the daughter of George and Lola (Gracy) Simpson, both of whom preceded her in death. She was married on December 26, 1942, in Paris, Texas, to Milton Papen, who preceded her in death in 1987. She was a graduate of California High School and Central Missouri State University. She began her career by teaching at several rural schools around Moniteau County, and then started at High Point Schools in 1952. When the school reorganized, she was hired as the seventh and eighth grade teacher and Principal. She was a member of the Moniteau County Teachers Association, and was awarded the 2002 Pioneer in Education Award from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. She was a member of High Point Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and played piano for over 50 years. She was also a member of Eastern Star. Survivors include: her daughter, Deena Remley and husband Harold of Jefferson City; two granddaughters, Angie McAlister and Lisa Remley-Washburn and husband Aaron Washburn; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jackson and Clayton McAlister, and Lucy and Miller Washburn. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at High Point Baptist Church. Burial will be in High Point Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Glenn Golden. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services in California. Memorials are suggested to either the High Point Baptist Church or High Point Cemetery, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak, California, MO 65018. Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California.
