Mrs. Evelyn B. Rhodes, age 87 years, of Fulton, Mo., died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at the Jefferson City Manor Nursing Center.
Evelyn was born June 28, 1922, in San Pierre, Indiana, the daughter of James E. and Velma Winfrey Vaughn. She was married on October 27, 1951, at Columbia, Mo. to Dwight D. Rhodes who preceded her in death on June 20, 1992. A life long resident of the central Missouri area, Evelyn was a 1941 graduate of Cole County R-5 at Eugene, Mo. A homemaker, Evelyn had also been employed as a hospital unit clerk in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Missouri Medical Center. She was a member of the New Bloomfield Christian Church; a member and treasurer of the Christian Women's Fellowship; and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 280 in Columbia. Evelyn loved writing poetry, and often was requested to recite her poetry at church services. She also loved acting and was a cast member of the production "Tom Jones" at William Woods University. Survivors include: one daugther, Joy Duemmel of Holts Summit, Mo.; one son, Dwight L. Rhodes and his wife Janmarie of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Thelma McKim of Holts Summit, Mo., Louella Urbanczyk of Granite Bay, California, and Gerry McMillin of Jefferson City, Mo.; two brothers, Jim Vaughn of Henderson, Nevada and C. Edward Rank of La Porte, Indiana; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one daughter, Dianne Rhodes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2010, at the New Bloomfield Christian Church with the Reverend Roger Obermeier and the Reverend Gary Baker officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, Mo. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice Compassus, the Shriners Childrens Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. or the New Bloomfield Christian Church Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
