Darren Scott "Doc" Kay, 30, of California, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010, at his residence following a long illness.
He was born January 11, 1980, the son of Roger and Paula (Schlup) Kay, both of whom survive of California. He was a 1999 graduate of California High School. He was a member of California United Church of Christ, baptized on April 13, 1980 and confirmed on April 9, 1995. He was an EMT for California City Fire Department and worked in the surrounding counties ambulance service. Darren served Moniteau County as a Level 3 Emergency Dispatcher through Moniteau County 911 from 1998 to 2005. Level 3 is the highest certification within the state of Missouri requiring fire, law and medical dispatch courses, as well as maintaining continuing education units. Darren was dispatch certified in APCO Fire Dispatch, APCO Law Dispatch, APCO Medical Dispatch, Infant, Child and Adult CPR with AED, Map and Phone Awareness, MULES Full Certification, Hazmat and Poison Control, Hostage Scene Control, Suicide Intervention, Customer Service and Severe Weather. Besides his parents, Darren is survived by one brother, Evan Kay of Jefferson City; one sister, Meghan Kay of California; maternal grandfather, Calvin Schlup of Jamestown; paternal grandmother, Ruby Kay of California; and one niece, Alisyn Kay. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Carl Kay; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth L. Schlup; and aunt, Debbie Kay. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, California. Burial will be in California Masonic Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Greg Morrow and Rev. Collette Jones. Visitation will also be on Saturday, July 3, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, California. Memorials are suggested to the Education Fund for Alisyn Kay or to California Fire Department Fundraising, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak, California, MO 65018. Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California.
