Carl Henry Martin, 83, California, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at St. Mary's Health Center, Jefferson City.
He was born September 23, 1926, in Moniteau County, the son of Roy and Edith Jobe Martin. He was united in marriage in 1948 to Ellen Messerli, who survives at the home. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe with the rank of sergeant. He graduated from the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, with Bachelor of Science, Master's and Specialist degrees. He worked 30 years as a basketball coach and teacher of math and science at schools located at Duenweg, Excelsior Springs, Raytown and Jefferson City. After retirement he enjoyed his home and farm in Moniteau County and raising cattle. He was also a fisherman, card player and loved to dance. He attended Salem United Church of Christ. He is survived by sister, La Homa Singleton and husband Jon, state of California; Kelly and Carlene Messerli; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Everett, Robert and Ralph Martin; and sisters, Ethel Thomas, Ruby Martin and infant sister. He liked Carl Sandburg's "Death comes once, let it be easy. Ring one bell for me once, let it go at that. Or ring no bell at all, better yet. Sing one song . . . Or sing nothing at all, better yet. Death comes once, let it be easy." His body, at his request, has been given to medical science. Arrangements were under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California.
