Gloria Keitel Mills, age 78, of Clayton, Mo., passed away Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, from complications following a stroke.
Beloved wife of Lewis R. Mills; loving mother of Andrea Mills Van Cleve (Peter D. Van Cleve) and Lewis R. Mills Jr. (Stacia Steppelman) of Jefferson City; doting grandmother of Sarah, Margaret and Bill Van Cleve and Robinson and Rachel Mills. Gloria, also known as Cupie, was born in St. Louis in 1931. She graduated from Mary Institute in 1949, and from Washington University in 1953, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She was a long-time volunteer for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, having joined its Women's Association in 1959. She chaired the Gypsy Caravan fund raising event in 1974 and 1977 and was honored in 2009 for having been a member of the volunteer association for over forty years. Gloria was also an active Docent, and Garden Host at the Missouri Botanical Garden, receiving her 20 year service pin in 2002. She was a long-time member of the St. Louis Woman's Club, active in its arts and literature and cuisine committees. Gloria spent the last 57 summers at the family cottage in Llewellyn Beach, St. Joseph Island, in northern Ontario. She was able to be there briefly, earlier this summer. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and St. George at 6345 Wydown Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63105. The family will greet friends after the service in the Great Hall of the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 790121, St. Louis, MO 63179-9884, the Missouri Botanical Garden, Attn: Tribute, P.O. Box 299, St. Louis, MO 63166 or SLWC Centennial Award, (an academic scholarship fund), c/o The Saint Louis Woman's Club, 4600 Lendell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108. Arrangements are under the directions of LUPTON CHAPEL, St. Louis.
