Mrs. Dean P. Johnson, age 97 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at the Adams Street Place Nursing Center.
Dean was born October 16, 1912, in Sullivan County, Mo., the daughter of Thomas D. and Mary R. Reger Purdy. She was married on June 5, 1936, in Sullivan County, Mo. to Kenneth K. Johnson who preceded her in death on September 28, 1993. She was a graduate of Harris High School, Harris, Mo. and attended Kirksville State Teachers College. She graduated from Lincoln University with a degree in education. A resident of the Jefferson City area since 1936, Dean was a homemaker. After her children were in school, she was a teacher with the Jefferson City Public Schools, Cedar City Schools, and retired from the New Bloomfield Schools. Dean enjoyed gardening, reading, bird watching, quilting, and family genealogy. Survivors include: two daughters, Sidney A. Martin and her husband James of Kansas City, Mo. and Virginia Johnson of Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, F. Douglas Johnson of Prescott, Arizona and Whitman W. Johnson and his wife Linda of Santa Fe, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Rachel Martin of Kansas City, Mo., and Hannah Humphrey and her husband Nick of Jefferson City, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Samuel Deskin, Ada Humphrey, and Max Humphrey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Garrett K. Johnson and Stephen D. Johnson, and one grandchild, Samuel Martin. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 2:00 until 3:30 p.m. with sharing of memories from 3:30 until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010.
